I wanted to give them 3.5 stars, mainly because this place is crazy expensive, but because of the friendliness of the staff, and the huge portion i received, 4 stars will do. $95 for two entrees, one appetizer, water to drink, and tip is a little much for a quick dinner in cahaba heights. Bolognese was very good, homemade pasta really made a difference. New York strip i received was enormous. Was cooked very well, but could have used a little more seasoning. Grits and pork belly appetizer were above average. Wait staff and hostess were very accommodating.

Excellent meal! Had the grapefruit salad and the lacquered pork roast. Verrrrrrry flavorful and tender. Served like lettuce wraps with sticky white rice and kimchi They also have my favorite wine, Turley Zinfandel. Looking forward to coming back to try one of the fish dishes.

4 solid stars! Good service.. We were there with out young daughter and they were fantastic to her! Great custom house made cocktails and Shirley Temples too . I'm a firm believer in house made cocktails elevate good fresh local food. They have a pretty good selection. Only down sides were the food was a bit cold when it came out. Beet and date salad could use a bit of acidity to tame the sweetness. Sit outside and enjoy the sunset.

Very good drinks! My wife and I sat at the bar and ordered drinks and small plates. The food was great and our favorite items were the polenta and the fennel sausage. Service was fantastic even though they were swamped. We will be going back.

Had a wonderful meal, fresh oysters on half shell that night were terrific followed by a great pork dish, another diner had a fish and another a pasta. Everything was well done and top off with bread pudding can not wait to return. The drinks were excellent and very creative by the way.

Excellent meal. Very fresh ingredients. The main dishes had unique flavors. Patrons should support this restaurant.

So excited about this new addition to cahaba heights! I met some ladies here to celebrate a birthday and we decided to try this place out. The bar is on one side of the restaurant and is pretty cozy and set up nicely! Cocktails are unique and creative and they have a nice selection of wine. The booth seating lines one side of the wall, making neighboring tables close to you. Then you have regular tables filling in the middle section of the restaurant. Service was wonderful. Our waiter was very knowledgable about the menu and recommended some very good starters and entrees! We started with the cheese tray, each cheese is $4 each and it came w pickled peaches and graham cracker like crackers and a side of honey. The combo was dynamite in the mouth! I got the vegetarian plate which is just a mash up of veg items from the other dishes and did they hook my plate up!!! I had butternut squash risotto, hominy w field peas and bell peppers, parsnips and potatoes, sweet potato hash and spinach, fresh slices of tomatoes, and a squash griddle cake...I mean seriously I was in heaven! We brought dessert so we didn't get to try any but our waiter said the lavender pound cake is his fav! Will definitely be back to try out some other dishes!

I went with a large group. At some places, that can pose a problem but the service and food were excellent. Everything was prepared perfectly. The wines were paired very well making the entire experience exceptional. Worth the wait. Cahaba Heights has finally scored something great!

I have heard some wonderful things about Food bar, and to be honest, my expectations were high. We came on a very busy Saturday night, but we were seated almost right away. The hostess was very friendly, and as was our waiter. We ordered our drinks and squash blossoms as an appetizer. We received them quickly. They were well plated and looked delicious! Despite being a bit underseasoned, they were quite delicious!

I think we've been here five times, but maybe it's six. I lose track. Sometimes I feel like the rest of my life is a lie, and the only thing that's real is a plate of their unusually large mussels or the coffee creme brulé. I've never had a disappointing experience here, but I'm also the kind of person who will clear my schedule for a night to enjoy a three course dinner and chat with friends. It's not a high turnover restaurant by design, and I love that about them. Just relax for a while and enjoy some good food.

It's Food. It's a Bar. It's Food Bar. But once you get past the really generic name and all the FUBAR jokes, it's not a bad place to eat. Nice to see decent non-chain restaurants filtering out into the metro. The first time, I went with my wife in December to escape all the Christmas madness. Had a good meal with few hiccups. This time, went after the movie with some friends and sat at the bar. I had a martini and a really good burger and fries. It might have been because I hadn't eaten all day, but that burger rocked. The waiter made a good, not great, martini. But on the whole a good place to eat. Way better than the mediocre Chinese place that was there before.

Interesting find in a strip center plaza. I attended a business social on the patio with drinks and appetizers. The decor felt like this place should be downtown or trendy neighborhood. The neighborhood may be headed in that direction but not completely there. The decor feels like so many other trendy rustic casual restaurants that have popped up in the past 10 years. I prefer these type of restaurants that seemed to have increased focus on the menu selections, presentation, and decor. All of the appetizers were good and tasted like they add their own twist to very traditional appetizers and small plates. I tried quite a few things but the real test for a any southern restaurant are the devil eggs. Fortunately, this place understands that something very simple should not be altered that much: they were excellent. None of the food really stood out. I need another visit with an entree to feel comfortable giving them higher than 3. This is a ok place to eat. I must say usually these type of places are talkative with lots of people having fun; the crowd wasn't really what I expected. If you are considering going to this place you should!

I went to Food Bar on a Tuesday night, and it wasn't packed but was plenty full. It took a few minutes for our server to come around, but once he did the service was decent (although sort of awkward). I had the beet and date salad appetizer, and while the ingredients were good quality, it was a bit one note. It needed more acidity to balance out the sweetness. I had the seared tuna with ramen in bacon dashi for my entree. The flavors were great, and the fish was cooked perfectly. The plate was a little monochromatic and grayish, but the taste made up for that. My dinner dates had the mussels (very tasty), lacquered pork with sticky rice (the kimchi was really bitter and the pork was dessert level sweet) and the grouper, which I didn't taste. All in all, our meal was pretty good.

The short: I'm with Emma E. on this one; I had really high hopes based on other reviews and the article in Bham Mag, but I found the atmosphere to be a bit pretentious and the food only so-so good. Nothing was *bad*, but when you're laying down a hundred bucks for dinner, you want a sight better than "not bad." The long: Cocktails: Good! Tasty and creative. Nice selection of booze and house-created concoctions. Appetizers: Portions vary *wildly* I had the cheese selection, and was very disappointed to pay $4 for a laughing cow-sized wedge of cheese and then another $4 less than a 1/4 cup of some poorly-described fruit-thing. On the other hand, my husband ordered the Confit of Chicken, which was pretty tasty, and came with enough to share with everyone at the table, or to have been a meal on it's own. Entrees: I had the rabbit - on the night we were there, the menu specified "Rabbit Shank," but they were out of the shanks by the time we ordered (an early 8pm). They advised they would have another cut of rabbit before I placed my order. The rabbit was cooked correctly (not too dry), but didn't have the rich flavor I was expecting. Likewise the risotto was bland, and not as creamy as I like. My husband had the Polla a la Plancha, which did have more flavor (as one would hope from a mole-based dish), but still, overall, there was nothing "wow" about it. Desert: Pot d Creme: YUM (but seriously, you can't mess this up) and Bread Pudding (very good). Maybe my impressions were dampened by the cold (it was a chilly night and we were seated right by the door, so we got blasted every time someone came in or out), or maybe it was the long wait (they don't take reservations and the bar was very crowded - I felt like I was leaning against the poor people trying to eat behind me), but overall I was not impressed. We probably won't go back.

I have eaten there twice. The first time was right after the restaurant opened. The food was excellent but service was a little awkward. People who are familiar with the restaurant industry know not to judge the quality of service during the first few weeks that the restaurant opens. I went there again last week. The kinks in the service seem to have been resolved. The food was again excellent. There was not a lot of different choices on the menu but everything we tried was prepared superbly. I highly recommend this place. I only have two caveats. The first is that this is in the middle of a strip mall. This would definitely turn some people off. (I did not find this very distracting.) The second that it is quite expensive. I think the quality of the food is compatible with the price but hey it is in a strip mall. Again, some people would disagree with me on that. One positive thing is that we are getting some great restaurants in the Cahaba Heights area. It's about time!

Fantastic. I'm a regular at some of the finest restaurants in town, and had been meaning to try Food Bar our primarily based on the chef's pedigree. Well, color me impressed. I'm tough to please, and I was very happy. We ordered a number of cocktails, apps, entrees and desserts and everything was spot-on, served with finesse, and generous portions to boot. We will CERTAINLY be going back, and telling our friends.

I cannot begin to tell you how much I enjoyed my experiences here. I've been here on three separate occasions with different friends, and it is a remarkable experience every time. My friends always enjoy it here. I'm going to take a different group of friends here this week to celebrate a birthday because I know that I'm going to be treated very well. The customer service is amazing. They don't take reservations, but I've never had an issue with getting a table, even on a Saturday night. Now, that might change as it becomes more popular, but right now, it's pretty perfect. Also, even though it gets crowded, we are NEVER rushed and our servers are splendid. Ryan has been our server the last couple of times, and he is fantastic. He offers suggestions, engages in the right amount of conversations, and is very attentive. The quality of food is impeccable and the portions are fairly generous. We enjoy the 'slow food' process, so we will order drinks, apps, entrees, and desserts. We are never rushed, and are encouraged to sit as long as we want with our after-dinner coffees. For the quality and quantity, the prices are very reasonable. It's definitely my new favorite restaurant in town, and I cannot recommend anything in particular because everything that I've had is amazing. This is a great place to go if you have a passion for proteins, love the farm to table restaurants, want to take your time eating, and want to have a relaxing, casual evening. Food highlights: * coffee creme brulee: I like creme brulee just fine, but when it's coffee flavored, that makes it amazing. * individual lemon meringue pies: I was hesitant to try this, but it looked so good. I am not a fan of overly tart deserts, but this had such a delicate balance between sweet and tart that I loved it. * proteins: we've had duck, rabbit, chicken, steak, and pork, and they've all been prepared very well. All tender and well cooked. The steaks had a nice char on it. * specials: if there is a special, get it before it sells out. * mussels:the mussels are hearty, and delicious!!! * lacquered beef short ribs (w/ homemade kimchi): if you like Korean style food and lettuce wraps, please get this.

First time at Food Bar tonight. Good crowd but no wait. My wife was pleased with her tomato salad and fried oysters. I ordered the special, New York strip with sweet potato hash and succotash. The steak was barely warm when served. To make things worse, it was tasteless and tough. It was the worst piece of meat I can remember being served in years. I would be embarrassed to prepare meat this poorly for either friends or strangers. A very "un-special" special. To make things worse, the service was slow and inattentive. Can't imagine giving this place another shot. No love in the food, but it does come at a very sporty price.

Good food. Nice atmosphere but for the price and quality of the food and service it could be a little nicer. Too industrial to be romantic and exclusive. Amazing lavender poundcake!

Food is consistent. You have to enjoy a restaurant with many different cooking styles and versatile menu. Service is good, location doesn't do it justice.
